Theater Love

The Arts, all forms really, have been a passion of mine from childhood on. From directing and starring in musicals in my basement as a kid, dancing, playing instruments, painting, to performing on stage in early adulthood, I feel so fortunate that I have been able to participate in these endeavors that grow confidence, empathy and creativity. Now, as a parent, I find myself exploring other areas of the art forms, finding myself more and more behind the scenes, contributing to the next generation of creative minds, designing set pieces, costumes and props for local children’s theater companies.

When designing items for children’s use, I am always thinking of safety and ease of use. Materials are often very light weight. How can I construct it so that a kid can sit, lean or stand on it? Will it tip over and if it does, will it hurt someone? Is it light enough for kids to carry on and off the stage? Does it help create a magical experience for all involved? It is truly an exercise in trial and error and I love every minute of it.
